Ironbridge - The Wharfage

Ironbridge Town Centre

From the Merrythought Factory travel along The Wharfage into Ironbridge town centre.

The main shops, food/drink establishments are all located along the one side of the street and the square so you will not miss anything that is on offer. There is a wide selection of gift and specialty shops, plus cafes, pubs, restaurants, wine bar, antiques, tobacconist, charity shops, bakery, speciality pork pie shop and Cornish pasties, hair dressers, post office, pharmacy, estate agents and more.

Museum of the Gorge [16]

Museum of the Gorge, Ironbridge

The Museum of the Gorge is located on the right next to the first main car park. An audio-video presentation will give you a flavour of what the gorge has to offer. There also is a scale model showing the river in Victorian times.

Standing in the car park if you look across the street at a three-storey house called the Old Rodney and look very closely to the left and right of the red door very faintly in the brickwork you can still read "Noted House for the Best Irish and Scotch Whiskeys......and spirits". The other side of the door reads "Bitter and Mild Ales on Draught, Bottled Ale and Stout and Cider".

The Iron Bridge

As you walk along the pavement you will get your first glimpse of the famous Iron Bridge. But also look up at the different levels of houses clinging to the hillside: their interesting designs, their chimney pots, the brick and roof tile patterns and you can see that the poorer classes lived lower down and the bigger and grander houses of the more well-to-do are at the top of the hill giving commanding views of the gorge, bridge and town.

Then look at the streets used to reach these houses, very steep, very narrow and barely enough room for a horse and cart! It’s a joy to walk these alleyways, to get different perspectives of the town from each turn you make and sneak glimpses of their lovely gardens.

Severn Bank, passing the Library House (now a B&B but formerly a library) is an especially picturesque walk to the Church Road, if one has enough stamina!
